Year-Round vs. Seasonal Eating

I just discovered this 43 minute podcast episode called “Year-Round vs. Seasonal Eating” about why eating seasonally and locally is so important and beneficial. It is from a podcast called Deconstructing Dinner out of Nelson British Columbia.IMG_0912

Deconstructing Dinner has lots of informative episodes about all things food. I really appreciate this podcast as it looks at every aspect of our food system and our personal experiences with food. It acknowledges how incredibly complex our food system is and leaves virtually no stone unturned.
I think this particular episode does a fantastic job of summing up the lesser known or acknowledged problems with our industrial food system while encouraging us to discover the wonders and benefits of eating locally/seasonally.

And while the speaker does a bit of finger pointing at the people in my profession, “Nutritionists”, I fully agree with him that our approach should not ONLY be “eat fruits and veggies” but should be (WHEN POSSIBLE) “eat local and seasonal fruits and veggies.”

I’ve been doing this as much as possible for the last 5 or so years, with many exceptions when I’m out to eat or at a friend’s house. Not everyone in our country has this luxury, privilege or ability, however, if you do live in a region that is able to grow food for a relatively extended season, and you have a decent budget to spend don food it is a challenge worth experimenting with.

Eating locally with the seasons is a really great way to get in touch with nature and the patterns of our four seasons. While the use of commercial scale green houses is controversial for some people, they do allow our farmers to extend the season of crops they grow which helps us have a wider variety of foods to eat and them have a wider variety of foods to sell.

Ah, endless controversies in this food system of ours! I hope you enjoy this episode and that you visit your local farmers market and take home some locally grown fruits and veg!
