Nutrition Education for the Public

Hello! Thanks for checking out my Nutrition Education for the Public page. This section of the website will be a continual work in progress where I will update, change and monitor information on the subject of food and nutrition that I think is important for people to understand.

I will gather and share information here from a variety of different sources. I will do my best to provide information here that is founded on credible research (i.e. “evidence based”). The general hope is that information from evidence based sources is more reliable and trustworthy than information from none evidence based sources (i.e. a general health magazine).

However, I find it necessary to be honest with you and say that at this stage in the game I don’t put 100% confidence in any nutrition related research or information. Much of what we read and hear about regarding Nutrition (in the public and academic settings) is flawed in someway or another. Often one or a number of the procedures used to conduct the research is lacking. Thus, even as a professional in the field it is hard for me to believe a lot of what I read. I see too much of the research driven by profits and money making, and too much of it convoluted by the complicated nature of the human. For me, the information available is too conflicting and biased to put 100% of my faith in.

Additionally, and maybe more importantly, humans are incredibly complicated and diverse! We could not be MORE different from one another than we are. I believe this fact makes it really hard to make “blanket statements” about nutrition when so many of us react so differently to different foods. Our body chemistry, the bacteria in our guts, our exposure and familiarity to foods, our comfort with and emotions around foods are different and the combination of those factors greatly affects how our body receives and handles the foods we eat. So, (though I wish it was) a diet of mostly veggies and plant based foods is not necessarily going to be the perfect solution for all people.

That said, I do my best to trust the medical professionals (doctors) and scientists who study health and make recommendations to you (and me) to eat a certain way to maintain or benefit our health. I do think there are foods that are healthier and less healthy and as a believer in the simplicity and benefits of whole foods I will promote these in my Nutrition practice as often as possible.

I welcome questions, comments and concerns. I will be as honest and unbiased in my responses as possible.

Please peruse my Nutrition Education for the Public pages and I hope you take something positive, motivating, encouraging, exciting, and/or new away with you! Thanks for your interest in understanding nutrition further! It’s very much the fabric of the human quilt.
