Philosophy

EQUAL ACCESS
I believe that all people should have equal access to quality nutrition support and education. This is why I offer my services at a sliding scale rate. As long as I am not sacrificing meeting my own needs I will always offer affordable nutrition support and education to the public.

WHOLE FOOD NUTRITION*
Whole Food Nutrition is at the heart of my nutrition philosophy and practice. I promote whole foods for a variety of reasons:IMG_1840

  1. They don’t contain any laboratory made/man made additives or preservatives or fillers.
  2. There’s no hidden/added salt, fat or sugar in a squash, egg, or banana.
  3. Cooking with and eating whole foods gives you more control over what you put in your body.
  4. Since they come straight from the earth and they are (more or less) what our ancestors survived on, a proper combination and variety of whole foods will provide all the essential nutrients (vitamins, minerals, proteins, fats and carbohydrates) that your body needs.
  5. I also see whole foods as important because cooking with them and consuming them strengthens our relationship with and respect for the earth.

HOME COOKING
Another aspect of nutrition that I promote philosophically is cooking and preparing meals at home. I encourage my clients to incorporate as many whole foods as they can into their diets and to do as much of their own food preparation as they are comfortable with. This generally increases not only the quality and healthiness of the foods consumed, but it also deepens our connections to the food we put in our bodies. There is an undeniable connection between the foods we eat and our mental state. I believe we can strengthen our mental health by putting more time and energy into the foods we consume.

INNATE DIFFERENCES – we are all unique
I recognize the vast variety of upbringings, experiences and financial places people come from. In the same respect we each have our own emotional connections to and associations with different foods. I strive to provide a comfortable experience for my clients where they feel welcome and safe and where they feel that their individual needs are being met.

*To clarify, when I say “whole foods” I refer to foods that have grown or been raised, that you can easily recognize and that are still comprised of all of the original edible parts. For instance, fruits and vegetables, nuts/seeds, eggs, whole milk, honey, meats, beans/legumes and whole grains (brown rice, whole rolled oats, quinoa, farro etc.) are all whole foods.

Disclaimer: Just because I promote whole foods and home cooking…

  • It doesn’t mean I am against foods that are not whole or that you didn’t prepare yourself.
  • It doesn’t mean that all whole foods are good for all people or that all foods eaten out are bad.
  • It doesn’t mean that if you eat only whole foods you are guaranteed to be healthy or if you eat out all the time you cannot be healthy. Everything is on a scale and we all occupy a different place on that scale. I strive to see your individual and unique needs and meet you where you are. If we both come to our meetings with open minds, we are bound to succeed in our goals!
